| It took the better part of the day to follow the tunnel to its end. The tunnel opened out along the Snakeskin River. However, a family of kruthiks just happened to be foraging right outside the tunnel. It was a bitter fight, as the whole family fought to the death.
The team then followed the river northwest until they came upon the wizard's tower descibed by the dwarven brothers. The front gate was guarded by two bugbears and a number of goblin underlings. The heroes took the direct approach, and charged at the guards.
The goblins did little in the fight. However, one of the bugbears proved to be a big problem. The creature would use a chain to grab Thor and use him as a shield. Eventually, Thor was able to escape, and the party ganged up on the bugbear.
The fight left the heroes weary, but worried they alerted anyone else inside the tower. Claw'd shifted into the shape of an insect, and scouted the first floor of the tower. He found a hobgoblin surrounded by a number of goblins. They were either drunk or not paying attention to what had happened outside. The group decided to rest in the forest until early the next morning.
The heroes then broke through the front door. Thor and Bob engaged the goblins closest to the door. Quinn summoned his spirit bear near the hobgoblin.
As the fight continued, Thor noticed a elven woman tied up in the far corner of the room. He decided to do something very un-barbarian like. Thor raced across the room and freed the elf. As a show of thanks, she used some cold spells to help take out the remaining goblins.
The elf introduced herself as Freeze, the apprentice of the wizard Kaleez. Freeze said she was taken captive during the raid on Dale, but wasn't sure where the rest of the hostages were. Since she was using cold spells in battle, Claw'd gave Freeze the staff of winter the group found in the white dragon's treasure.
The heroes then moved to the tower's next level. They were ambushed by a goblin spellcaster and some archers on a wooden platform. Two other archers fired on them from behind a short wall. Thor charged at the archers behind the wall, but the floor collapsed, sending the goliath crashing to the first floor.
Claw'd decided to circle around the hole in the floor, but awoke three skeletons in the northwest corner. Freeze then targeted the archers behind the wall, while Quinn and Bob took on the goblins on the platform. Bob tossed the spellcaster off the platform and down the hole in the floor, killing the goblin. Thor eventually got back upstairs to help take out the last of the archers.
As they moved to the third and final floor, the group found a goblin sitting on a throne. He was guarded by a bugbear and two gray wolves. The goblin called himself the big boss, and ordered the heroes to surrender. As the adventurers started moving into the room, they were ambushed by a goblin hiding near the staircase. Thor and Bob quickly took out the wolves. Claw'd shifted into his panther form and jumped up the stairs to attack the bugbear. Quinn again summonded his spirit bear to deal with the sneaky goblin. Freeze shot cold spells at anyone she could she.
The battle ended fairly quickly, with few problems for the heroes. They found some treasure near the throne, including two large gems and a magical totem. Claw'd claimed the totem.
There was no sign of the kidnapped townspeople. However, they did find a note written in goblin. None of them could read the writing, so the heroes returned to the Town of Dale. They asked the shaman if he could read the letter. The shaman said it was written in a older version of the language that he didn't know. He told the heroes to head to the Dwarven community of Hammer's Hall. The dwarves there have long been enemies of goblins and may be able to read the letter. The mayor also showed up and offered the heroes some equipment to help in their mission to rescue his wife and child. |
