Gems of Rule
Session Date: June 25, 2003   Next

The party was reviewing the battle reports from the opening days of the war. Everyone in the group had returned to the Haranshire. The ruins of Parlfrey's keep were being examined and plans for a new keep, the keep of the party, and a surrounding village were being evaluated.

ZaFoot went to the Jewelry store in Milboune. He wanted to see Herman the Jeweler to try and rekindle the apprenticeship and get involved in the store again.

Herman was happy to see ZaFoot. Herman always thought as ZaFoot as the cuttest little boy, and smart too, if he could do all that adventuring. Herman told ZaFoot about a deal a customer had asked about. An elderly man named Granymr was looking for one of his family heirlooms, called the Gem of On Wa Gar, a Sapphire, 6 inches long, and 3 inches wide with a smooth round cut, to be recovered from some ruins in the mountains to the north. Rumors in town lead Dred and ZaFoot to believe that a large blue dragon, now believed to be dead, once lived in the area. The mountains were also home to fire giants.

A map was delivered a few days later. The map lead them to a cave in the mountains about 50 miles north of Milbourne.

Dred and ZaFoot set off. There was a lot of money offered in this deal, too much to pass up. Finding the cave was easy, almost too easy.

Dred and ZaFoot entered the cave and decended. Down and down they went for over an hour. They came to a large wooden door. Beyond was a cavern with a large pit trap. Around it they went. And through the passage beyond they continued. They arrived at a split in the passage, one to the right, the other to the left. Left they went. As they progressed, they found nothing alive, only a lot of unanimated giant sized skeletons. "Well maybe fire giants once lived here, but now they are gone."

They came upon a large cavern complex, huge was an understatement. Large marble pillars supported the ceiling. The room was finished with a fine dwarven touch. Beyond were three exits. The left and right ones lead to six abandoned sleeping rooms. The middle lead to an arena, and the treasure room they were looking for.

They ascended the steps and opened the door and were amazed at the treasure they saw. They ran to it, only to hit an impenitrable, shiny wall. Dred poked at it, he grabbed a bone from one of the giant skeletons on the stairs and stabbed at the wall. Strangely enough, when it shattered, it hit the floor and appeared in the mirror wall as a flesh covered bone dripping with fresh blood.

It now looked like Dred could walk back toward the entrance, but appeared as if he were walking to the treasure, even though there was no treasure at the entrance, as ZaFoot looked into the mirror. ZaFoot guided Dred to the corner, and Dred scooped and dug in the empty air, until it looked like he had the Sapphire. Dred did have something, but it was only a small pebble, nothing else, no gold, no gems, no jewels.

Dred, being a learned fighter that traveled in the company of magicians for years, had an idea. He took the pebble, and pressed it against the mirror wall. Sparks flashed, lightning flew, and pieces of the wall shattered. The pebble was now a large sapphire.

Not knowing why, or really caring that much either, Dred and ZaFoot thought they had what they were looking for and exited the complex.

They returned to the Jeweler in Milbourne. Herman was crabby and disappointed they hadn't left on the adventure already, he didn't know or believe once they told him that the adventure was done and the Sapphire was in hand. Looking at it, Herman couldn't believe it to be an heirloom, it was blackened, fractures in the stone and many imperfections, made it look dark. Despite its size, it was still a cheapened relatively worthless sapphire.

The following day, Granymr showed up. A lackey brought in bags and bags of gold, Hermans payment, and Dred and ZaFoot's reward, for the Stone. Granymr grabbed the stone, held it to his head, and in a flash of light he turned into a blue figure, star over his right eye, laughing maniacly he disappered into thin air.

Oh well, ho hum, so much for that. Dred and ZaFoot went to transfer their gold into bags of holding, only to find the gold had turned into sand. Herman, Dred, and ZaFoot had been had.
